In Cappadocia, Turkey, Blossom Hills Fellows Leonie Zikos and Ruth Lockwood are using an innovative therapeutic approach known as “bibliotherapy” in their Puppet Theater Project to help refugee children heal from the trauma of war. This method involves storytelling or reading specific texts to allow the children to identify and validate their feelings and to help them develop coping and problem-solving skills. Over the last few months, the program has based this work on The Ugly Duckling, a classic tale of searching for one’s identity that resonates with the refugee children who have experienced discrimination, racism, and prejudices.
