For Syrian refugee children attending Blossom Hill Fellow Leyla Atik’ s art therapy center, the summer is turning out to be very busy. Following the successful homework support groups this past year, the program launched a summer school for Syrian refugees who will attend first grade in September. Designed as an accelerated preschool program, children come to the center two times a day for two hours where they engage one-on-one with an adult volunteer to learn basic concepts and skills needed for primary schools. These include colors, shapes, numbers, opposites, fine motor skills, and teamwork. Influenced by inter-modal art therapy, each concept is introduced and reinforced through visual arts, dance movement, and music activities. The main goals of the group are to engage children and reduce the educational gap as early as possible, enhance their potential to adapt to a school environment and make learning a fun experience. #bhturns10
