Blossom Hills fellows Max Kessler, Tooba Shahid, and Rahmatullah Hamraz have partnered to employ conflict-affected young Afghan women to sew sleeping bags. These highly insulated bags have been designed to keep displaced families and children warm during the coldest months of the year. The team began production of the sleeping bags this month, using new, industry-quality sewing machines that are powered by solar panels and batteries when the grid electricity is out. Through a pilot program this winter, the team will sew and distribute 200 sleeping bags in a displaced persons camp outside of Kabul.
